Lewis will be joining Chambers from 1st February 2025.
Lewis undertook pupillage at the Crown Prosecution Service and became a Crown Prosecutor in 2021. He subsequently became a Crown Advocate in 2023. He gained a wide knowledge of prosecution work, undertaking advocacy is both the Magistrates’ and Crown Court. Lewis also charged cases ranging from theft to attempted murder.
Lewis is able to represent defendants accused of a wide rang of criminal offences both in the Magistrates and Crown Court. He has a particular interest in motoring law and has a wide experience of all types of Magistrates Court advocacy including bail applications, mitigation, sentencing and contested trials.
Prior to working for the CPS, Lewis worked as an Assistant Director for the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy in Whitehall. Whilst there he led on taking a bill through Parliament concerning the mutual recognition of professional qualifications. Prior to this, Lewis worked for 8 years in licensing and health and safety for various local authorities. This included investigating licensing breaches and bringing prosecutions. Lewis also represented the local authorities at licensing sub-committee hearings where applications for licences were determined.
Lewis’ criminal practice encompasses sexual offences, violence, dishonesty offences, road traffic offences, drugs offences and immigration offences.
Keen to expand practice to include regulatory Prosecutions, acting for both the Prosecuting authority and Defendants. Lewis previously worked as a Licensing Manager for a local authority in London where he was responsible for all licences under the Licensing Act 2003 and the Gambling Act2005. He is also experienced in special treatment licences, sexual entertainment venue licences, sex shop licences and hackney carriage licences.
R v B [2024] - Prosecuted a Defendant for an offence of Conspiracy to Commit Burglary and an offence of Conspiracy to Steal. The conspiracy comprised of a group of males who have targeted residential properties where mid-high value cars were stolen. The Defendant in this case was paid a modest amount to attend some of the burglaries and to drive some of the stolen vehicles. The Defendant received a custodial sentence of 5 years and 8 months.
R v T [2024] Prosecuted a Defendant for possession of two blades in a public place. The case comprised of cross examination of a complex Defendant. The jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts within an hour.
R v B [2024] – Prosecuted a Defendant for the offence of voyeurism and breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The matter was complicated by the fact that the Complainant had passed away prior to trial and so her evidence had to be adduced using the hearsay provisions. The Defendant was found guilty on all counts.
R v B [2023] – Prosecuted a Defendant who was accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl who was undertaking work-experience at the Defendant’s farm. The case involved strategic cross examination of an elderly Defendant as well as examination in chief of the Complainant and her family members which was highly emotive. The Defendant was found guilty on all counts.
Lewis completed the BTPC at City, University of London and achieved an “extremely competent” classification.
Lewis was called to the Bar in 2020.
Inner Temple
Lewis completed an LLM Qualifying Law Degree at Birkbeck, University of London where he achieved a “distinction” classification. Lewis won a prize for the highest grade in his dissertation which was on the effects of the Licensing Act 2003 on the public house trade.
He previously completed a BA (hons) in American (United States) Studies at the University of Essex where he achieved a 2:1.
Lewis is a Grade 2 prosecutor.
